Readers' Cup Final

The ninth Annual East Ayrshire Readers’ Cup Quiz final was held at Doon Academy on Tuesday 28th May 2013 with 5 schools competed, Doon, Cumnock, Auchinleck, St Joseph’s and Kilmarnock academies, in front of an audience of supporters, teachers,  Mr Graham Short and Councillor Primrose.  The competition was very close with all the schools neck and neck until the final round. Cumnock Academy’s outstanding full marks in both the Battle of the Books sections was just enough for them to clinch the title, beating Doon by 2 marks.
All the participants were delighted with their goodie bags generously provided by Renaissance Learning, home of Accelerated Reader and Accelerated Maths. The prizes for the winning team were provided by Scotia Books of Kilsyth.
Congratulations to the Doon Academy team of Jade McClymont, Rebecca Steele, Alison McCann and Scott Limond and their coach Miss Borthwick.

World Book Day 7th March 2013

We celebrated WBD this year with an exhibition in the library of book sculptures made by S3 under the tuition of Mrs Murdoch, Art and Design student teacher. Visitors to the exhibition were asked to vote on their favourite. The winner was Colin McTaggart’s Tank with Rory Parker’s Lost at sea a close second. All the exhibits were much admired.

To see more pictures of the book Sculptures go to Doon Reads.

S1 and S2 had an opportunity in their library periods to view the exhibition, and also to see some of the book trailer videos that Ms Davidson’s S3 English class had made. Martyn Pig by Keiran Madden and Colin McTaggart and Roxy’s Baby by Katie Roberts were the two voted most likely to make you want to read the book.

All pupils received their WBD £1 book vouchers and S1 and S2 received their Accelerated Reader certificates.

Readers' Cup Quiz

The S1 and S2 heats of the Readers’ Cup were held in the Library. S1 put in an outstanding performance with Raecar winning with an outstanding score of 30.5 out of a possible 40 points.  The winning Raecar team consisted of Jade McClymont, Melanie Connell, Brooke Paulin, and Ryan Macmillan. They answered questions on the author Barry Hutchison, horror stories, humorous stories, and family stories.

The S2 competition followed immediately afterwards. S2 had similar questions, but with mysteries substituted for family stories. Again the winning team of Katie Burrell, Wendy Roulstone, Gareth Kerr, and Caitlyn Steele were from Raecar.  The competition was much closer in S2 with the winning margin being only 1 1/2 points, separating Raecar from Doon and Finlas only 1/2 a point behind.

Congratulations to the winning teams and to everyone who took part.
Thank you to Mrs Bax, librarian, for organising the event.
