Mini-sagas
S1 and S2 pupils, in Ms. Borthwick’s English classes, who took part in the Mini-Sagas competition, have now received their published book. The pupils are all really excited to see their names in print.

English Dept commended
The English department has passed the verification of Intermediate 2 and Higher Language Study unit. In addition, the department was commended for the administrative handling of the process and for the variety and quality of tasks in writing. Well done.

Mini Saga Competition
Miss Borthwick's S1 and S2 English classes entered the Young Writers Mini Saga competition. This was a competition, which required you to write a complete story in 50 words. Many of the Doon pupils in S1 and S2 were successful and will now have their Mini Sagas Published in the Young Writers book, "Mini Marvels Southern Scotland".

Dracula trip
Higher and Intermediate 2 English pupils will be visiting the Palace Theatre in Kilmarnock on the evening of Thursday 7th October to see a production of Liz Lochead’s ‘Dracula’. The cost is £11 which includes ticket and transport. Please see Mrs. Murray or Miss. Borthwick for more details.

Virtual Author Visit
On Thursday 17th June the author Michael Morpurgo will be appearing in an online live event to pupils at Doon Academy as part of Authors Live from the Scottish Book Trust in partnership with BBC Scotland Learning. He will be talking about his illustrious career and what inspired some of his most famous work,

The Crucible trip
The English department took a group of S5/6 pupils to see a performance of Arthur Miller’s ‘The Crucible’ by Ayr College Drama and Performance students. The production was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended and will be a useful tool in helping the pupils in their study of the play.

Scots language workshops
Dr. Fred Freeman, the renowned author and academic, visited the school and took S1 and S2 classes for workshops on the Scots Language. Through the medium of Burns and Scottish songs Dr Freeman gave a lively talk on the history of Scots. Pupils were able to show their knowledge and prowess of the language and they really enjoyed singing traditional Scottish songs. Whilst at the school Dr Freeman was interviewed by the BBC School News Reporters for the BBC School Report.

J. K.Rowling - Writer of the month
In English, May’s Writer of the Month is J.K. Rowling author of the Harry Potter books. Pupils will be exploring the life and works of this famous author and presenting a display for the corridor.

Writer of the Month
In the English Department there will be a new ‘Writer of the Month’ award with the winning work being displayed in the corridor. The theme for April will be focused on William Shakespeare. Mrs Brotherston is looking for suggestions for themes for the coming months.

Literature Circles

In English, S3 pupils taking part in Literature Circles have been choosing the books for their group reading. The pupils used book review sites to help them make their decision. The Discussion Directors have selected their group and are busy allocating team roles. Literature Circles are a fun way of encouraging pupils to read and discuss books.

To Autumn
In the English Department Mrs Brotherston’s S4 pupils created an exciting display of essays about the poem ‘To Autumn’ by John Keats. The English corridor is now looking very autumnal!

BBC School News Day
S1 pupils in Mrs Dorans English class will be taking part in the BBC School News Report. The pupils will work with a mentor from the BBC, and on School News Report Day, the 26th March, they will be making the news for the day.
Burns Competition
S1/2 pupils are busy learning their Burns poem for the Burns Recitation Competition, which will take place in December. Good Luck to them all.
