The Jolomo Schools Painting Award
S6 student Ryan
Watson has been selected to take part in an exhibition, his work will be
displayed in the Scottish Parliament as part of The Jolomo Schools Painting
Award. The work will be exhibited in the garden Lobby of the Parliament during
week commencing 9th September where the paintings will be seen regularly by
MSPs, their staff and others who work in the Parliament. Ryan, who studied
Advanced Higher Art and Design this year, will be starting a HND Art course at
Ayr College commencing in September. Congratulations and well done to Ryan,
this is a fantastic achievement.
Willow weaving
Our local willow
artist Geoff Forrest came into school on Friday the 7th of June to
work with Art and Design students. The students learnt about the art of willow
weaving and created beautiful sculptures and platters, everyone really enjoyed
the workshops. Thank you to Geoff for taking time out of his busy schedule to
come in and work with our students.

Ayr College Graphic Design Day
S3 Art and Design students took part in a Graphic Design day at Ayr College on the 30th of May. The students gained experience in photography skills and Photo Shop. Wendy Roulstone, Rebekah Copeland, Morgan Davis and Amy Watson thoroughly enjoyed the workshops and the experience of being in college for the day.

Graphic Design “have a go” project
The Visual Arts department at Ayr College is offering an interactive
day of graphic design and digital art as part of the World Skills ‘Have a Go’
project. A group of S3 Art and Design students will be taking part in a Graphic
design day at Ayr College on Thursday 30 May. The day will be broken into two
sessions, morning and afternoon, starting with a basic photography project and
leading to an afternoon of experimentation in the latest Mac based creative
digital manipulation techniques. The emphasis will be on a ‘fun’ and ‘creative‘
day using digital tools to produce striking and effective graphic designs that
the pupils will be able to take home. The students are really looking forward
to this.

Fashion Show
Students who are modelling for the school’s fashion show are getting the opportunity to go and see Ayr College’s annual Fashion Show dress rehearsal on the afternoon of the 12th of June. This will be a fantastic experience and it will help students with their catwalk moves and it will also give them first-hand experience of a real fashion show.

Primary CPD
Primary staff from Patna, St Xaviers, Damellington and Bellsbank took part in a textile painting course which was organised and delivered by Miss Fuller in the Art and Design department. Staff were able to experiment will fabric paint and come up with a unique t-shirt design based on the Scottish Dark Skies Observatory. Miss Fuller was delighted with the turnout of staff and the quality of work produced. Primary staff will now deliver this unit of work to their pupils.
The work produced will then be modelled at the primary 7 “Celebration of Success” day at Doon Academy in June.

Glasgow School of Art Students
Two students from the Glasgow School of Art will be coming into the Art and Design department for a two day placement. The two second year students are currently studying Product Design and will be working with S1-S3 pupils in March.

Burns Supper Art competition
Congratulations to Caitlin
McCreath and Samantha Torbet for being placed in our annual Burns Art competition.
Caitlin received first prize and Samantha was placed a close 2nd.
Caitlin’s winning entry will be used for the school’s Burns supper programme
cover.
An overall class prize was awarded to Olivia McCutcheon 1B, Lewis McKnight 1F, Kieran Gallacher 1R, Gabrielle Graham 1D, Fallon Smith 2B, Brooke McCulloch 2D, Scott Arthur 2F and Ryan McCreath 2R.
Well done to all students involved!

Art Department open afternoon
The Art and Design Department is having a “drop in” afternoon on Tuesday the 19th of February 2013 for all parents and guardians from 2.45pm until 4.30pm. The Art Department would like to take this opportunity to invite you to come along to our open afternoon to see some of the fantastic art work being produced by current students within the department.
During the afternoon you will be able to view the department, meet some of the students and view students working on their current SQA Art folios.
You will also be able to ask any questions you have concerning courses, coursework and extra curricular activities offered by the Art Department.

Art and Design Department Fashion Show
The fashion show will take place on the evening of Wednesday the 19th of June 2013. We have been very lucky to secure the shop M&Co. Instead of having
the fashion show in school the show will now be held in M&Co in Alloway Street, Ayr. Our local hairdressers, Classy Cuts, will be doing
the hair, make up and tan. There will be several different sections to the
fashion show varying from, Mardi Gras masks, customised fashion, bodices,
recycled fashion as well as primary school section. If you are keen to get

Art Exhibition in the Dick Institute Kilmarnock
The East Ayrshire Schools annual Art Exhibition will officially open to the public on Friday 1st of February in the Dick Institute in Kilmarnock. Students, Ryan Watson, Amy Watson, Bronwyn Dempsey and Laura McCreath will have work displayed in the exhibition.

Glasgow School of Art
Two fashion and textile art students from the Glasgow School of Art did a two day placement within the Art and Design Department. The students worked with senior pupils helping them with their art folios. The two art students also delivered a presentation to students on their own work and what is was like to go the art school. Thank you to Emma McAndrew and Catherine Farrar for their hard work.
S6 student Ryan Watson is currently undertaking a portfolio preparation course at The Glasgow School of Art on a Saturday. Ryan is sitting Advanced Higher Art and Design this year and is hoping to secure a place at art school.

Art Exhibition
The opening of the Art exhibition at the Doon Valley Museum was a great success. The opening was well attended by local councillors, parents, pupils, staff and members of the local community. The exhibition will run for the remainder of December, opening times are Thursday to Saturday from 10am until 4pm.

Willow Art
Local
artist Geoff Forrest has been working with Miss Fuller’s master class making
willow stars and wreaths for Christmas. The opening of the Art department’s
annual exhibition will take place on Thursday the 29th of November
at 6.30pm until 8.00pm in the Doon
Valley Museum
in Dalmellington. All are welcome to attend, refreshments provided and arts and
crafts will be on sale.
Poetry Workshop at the Sea Fever exhibition
S3 Art and Design students took part in a poetry workshop with author and poet Kate Tough at the Dick Institute in Kilmarnock on Monday the 19th of November. Students firstly had a tour of the Sea Fever exhibition and then created their own poems based on the exhibition. All students really enjoyed the workshops and had fun writing their poems. Students will now take what they have learnt and write a poem about themselves based on the self portrait they have been working on in class.

Art
The Art Department held a late night supported study from 3.30pm until 7pm where senior art students were able to work on their folio pieces. Pizza and cupcakes were supplied at half time to replenish energy levels! This event was well attended. The next late night supported study is scheduled for Tuesday the 4th of December. The Art department also offers supported study on a Tuesday lunchtime and a Wednesday and Thursday afterschool.

Art and Design
The Art and Design department will be offering supported study for all S3-S6 Art students every Tuesday lunchtime and on a Wednesday afterschool from 2.45pm until 3.45pm.
Local willow artist Geoff Forrest will be coming into school to work with art students on a Wednesday afternoon during master class. Students will be making willow decorations that will be sold in the Doon Valley Museum in December when the annual school art exhibition is on.

Glasgow School of Art trip
S6 Art and Design students visited The Glasgow School of Art and took part in a Product Design project. Students also took part in a tour of the Mackintosh building and the School of Architecture where they were able to find out more information on courses and how to apply to art school.

Fashion Show
