Netball success
Doon Academy’s S1/2 netball team travelled to Kyle Academy on Tuesday 18th December to play their last game of 2012. After an intense warm up the girls were ready to take on the school currently at the top of the league. The first half got off to a flying start with Doon’s defence duo of Olivia McCutcheon and Sophie Paulin keeping all Kyle attempts at net away. Lori McLarty kept her cool every time she was given the ball in the top circle and with Macy Biggar’s help; she managed to score 4 goals in the first half.
Although the score line was 4-0 in Doon Academy’s favour at half time, the game was incredibly tight and after a brief team talk, the girls knew they had to continue with their hard working ways in the second half. Melanie Connell took the first centre well and with Brook Paulin and Brook Welsh in the wings, Doon’s girls ensured they were driving forward once again.
Kyle made a few team amendments at half time and the girls did a great job of making a comeback, getting 5 goals past Doon’s defence. Thankfully our girls were not put off by a strengthened Kyle team and managed to score another 3 goals. Well done to all the girls involved for beating a strong netball school and finishing the year on netball high. Particular congratulations to Olivia McCutheon who received the well deserved accolade of ‘Player of the Match’. Her defending skills were second to none and her effort level never faltered for her 24 minutes of phenomenal play!

Netball news
On Monday the 12th November, Doon Academy’s S1/2 netball team left a blustery
Dalmellington and headed for Kilmarnock to play Loudon Academy.
This was the first game of the season for the girls and was made more exciting
by the fact it was away from home.
The game started fiercely with Loudon gaining a four point advantage. Lori McLarty
made heads go up as she scored from the circle line taking the game to 4-1.
Loudon scored another point but thanks to Macey Biggar and Brooke Welsh helping
get the ball to the Doon circle, Chloe Hainey and Lori McLarty were able to score another three points.
Going into the second half, the score remained at 5-4 to Loudon. Katie Johnstone
stayed in at Goal Keeper but after an energetic and successful first half,
Olivia McCutheon was replaced by Sophie Paulin as Goal Defence. Melanie
Connell, Alison McCann and Brooke Paulin took to centre court and soon the ball
was quickly getting to Doon’s net. The score evened out at 5-5 one minute into the second half and from there on in both teams scored one after the next.
The final score ended as 9-9 and everyone involved deserves praise for the maximum
effort put into the game. Special recognition goes to Chloe Hainey who was
awarded Player of the Match.

Nteball report
Doon Academy’s S1/2 Netball Team left Dalmellington on a sunny afternoon to go to Prestwick for their league game. Arriving at the school, Doon’s pupils were very impressed with Prestwick Academy’s new campus and all agreed it was “like going to a hotel for the afternoon”. Both sides warmed up quickly as all were eager to get started.
The first half saw Doon hold the majority of possession but after five minutes no goals had been scored. It didn’t take long however for Doon to get into their stride with Cheryl Allison putting four nets on the scoreboard for her team. Prestwick replied with one goal before half time leaving Doon in the lead before any team changes were made. Rebekah Copeland and Charelle Boyce played hard and well during the first half and were replaced with fresh legs in the form of Sophie Paulin and Chloe McDerment for the second half.
Amy Mitchell was moved to Goal Shooter and did a great job in helping Cheryl score more goals. Melanie Connell played a solid role in controlling centre court alongside her Wings, Brooke Paulin and Savannah McMahon. Prestwick made a valiant attempt at putting the Doon girls under pressure and were able to catch up in goal difference in the second half.
The Doon girls proved just too fast for the opposition though with the final score of the season being 9-8 to Doon Academy.
Well done to Brooke Paulin who received Player of the Match.

Netball report
Doon’s S1/2 Netball team travelled to Kyle Academy
on Tuesday 1st May to play the League winners. Kyle’s attacking side quickly
broke down Rebekah Copeland and Sophie Paulin’s defence and went ahead easily
in the first few minutes. Melanie Connell, Brooke Paulin and Savannah McMahon
tried desperately to get things active for Doon Academy’s
side in the centre court but to no avail. Cheryl Allison played a good game
trying to get the ball to Charelle Boyce in the top circle but unfortunately
Kyle’s defence proved just too strong for our small school. Alana Murray came
on at half time and got the ball to Charelle who scored Doon’s
only point. As the game got closer to full time Doon
knew there was not going to be a win this time but continued to try their
hardest.
Well done to Kyle who gained a comfortable win and remain at the top of the Ayrshire League.
Congratulations to Savannah McMahon who received Player of the Match.

Netball success
On Wednesday 7th December, Doon Academy’s
S3/4 netball team played Queen Margaret. With the game not starting until
4.30pm, the girls were well warmed up and ready to take on the netballing world
by the time the first whistle was blown. The centre court was occupied by
Annabel McTaggart, Paige McMahon and Cheryl Allison and the opposition quickly
discovered that they were up against some strong players. With Lauren Shaw out
with a leg injury, it was up to Claire Boyd and Alana Murray to stop the goals coming
from Queen Margaret and they did this with precision and determination. Up at
the shooting circle Jade Scott and Sophie Dobbie did their usual fantastic job
of getting the ball through the net. By half time the score was at 7-2 to Doon
and by the end of the second half, the final score stood at 13-3 to Doon.
Well done to Alana Murray and Cheryl Allison who
stood in for the S3/4 team.
Congratulations also go to Cheryl who walked away
with Player of the Match after her valiant effort in Wing Attack.

Celtic Dragons trip
On Thursday 5th May, 42 pupils from Doon Academy and Dalmellington Primary visited the Kelvin Hall to watch a professional netball game. The Glasgow Wildcats took on the Celtic Dragons in a highly competitive and fast paced game. We stopped for dinner on the way to the Kelvin Hall, with all pupils proving that Doon Valley pupils have good manners and are a credit to their school. At the Kelvin Hall we watched both teams warm up and everyone was impressed with the amount of stretching and drills that were carried out. With all girls on court, it was obvious that the average height of a netball player is more than the average height of a non netball player! The game proved to be very entertaining with loud cheers every time Glasgow scored. All pupils were recorded for Sky Sports and we were on television later that night. The Celtic Dragons were ahead at half time but this slightly disappointing result was forgotten as we were entertained by the cheerleaders. The Wildcats managed to pull some points back after half time but the Celtic Dragons were definitely the stronger team, winning 49-30. It was a late night with pupils not returning until 10.30pm but I think everyone agreed it was worth it. Well done to all pupils who behaved impeccably during all aspects of the trip.
Netball success
Doon Academy’s netball team travelled to Kilmarnock to play St. Joseph’s Academy. The game got off to a tight start with both sides scoring alternatively. Annabel McTaggart controlled the game well from her centre position with Paige McMahon and Amy Fulton helping in the wings. With a very fast Jade Scott passing the ball to Sophie Dobbie, Doon was able to score 5 points in the first half. Unfortunately St. Joseph’s scored 6 putting Doon in a trailing position going into the second half. After a quick team talk and some substitutions from St. Joseph’s, Doon got off to a quick start equalising in the first minute. With Claire Boyd and Lauren Shaw determined not to let St. Joe’s score any more, the game was certainly in Doon’s control. With Jade’s quick thinking and movement, she was able to give the ball to Sophie who scored a phenomenal 9 goals in total during the game. The final score ended with Doon winning 10-6. Well done to everyone including Paige McMahon and Claire Boyd who received joint ‘Players of the Match’

Netball success
On Thursday 17th March, Doon Academy’s S3 netball team celebrated St. Patrick’s Day with a game against Belmont Academy. The game began with a point scored at each end. Jade Scott was on fire as she moved about court feeding the ball to Sophie Dobbie and also scoring herself. With the usual defenders of Claire Boyd and Lauren Shaw back in position no more nets were scored by Belmont and we went into half time up 2-1. With Annabel McTaggart doing a fine job controlling play in centre court, Paige McMahon and Amy Fulton proved to be strong wings. The ball got back to Doon’s centre circle and allowed Jade and Sophie to score another 2 nets. The final score ended with Doon winning 4-1. This low score line was unusual for our girls but with another win under their belts, they are delighted. Well done to Jade Scott who was deservedly named Player of the Match.

Netball success
On Monday 7th March, Doon Academy’s S3 netball team visited Ardrossan Academy for the next game in their league. After a long bus journey, our girls were eager to get going. The game started with a fast Ardrossan point but Doon was not put off, as they quickly got another 3 points back. Annabel McTaggart controlled centre court with ease with Tammy Reid and Paige McMahon helping in the wings. By half time, the score was 10-1 to Doon and spirits were high. Going into the second half, Ardrossan managed to pull back some points after their half time change over but it wasn’t enough. Sophie Dobbie and Jade Scott worked the circle like experts and managed to get another 5 nets. At the opposite side of the court in defence, Claire Boyd and Amy Fulton, worked well together in keeping the Ardrossan shooters from scoring many more. The final score ended with Doon Academy winning 15-6. Well done to Sophie Dobbie who received Player of the Match for her accurate and consistent shooting.

Netball
Doon’s netball team travelled to Kyle Academy to see their old rivals in a league match. The S3 team warmed up well and looked good in training but unfortunately could not stop Kyle from scoring 10 points in the first half of the game. Jade Scott managed to score 1 point for the Doon girls but the Kyle attackers kept getting round the long arms of Lauren Shaw and Claire Boyd and gained another 5 points in the second half. Sophie Dobbie helped Jade get another 2 points but unfortunately by this time it was too late. Annabel McTaggart did well to keep up in centre court and control play but unfortunately it was not to be for Doon Academy. A big thank you to Reagan Heggie who played WA and well done to Paige McMahon who received Player of the Match.

Netball win
Doon Academy netball teams played Queen Margaret Academy at home. The game got off to a roaring start as Sophie Dobbie quickly scored 2 points in the first 3 minutes. Jade Scott helped her with another point before Queen Margaret attackers got past the long arms of Lauren Shaw and Claire Boyd. Not to be deterred, Annabel McTaggart and Fiona Kennedy pushed forward allowing super shooter Sophie to score another two nets. The girls went confidently into half time with a score of 5-1. Paige McMahon did her best to keep the Queen Margaret attackers away from the circle but they played hard going into the second half and scored another 2 points quickly. Thankfully our girls played just as hard and they too scored another 3 points. Queen Margaret scored another net near to full time but this was not enough to stop our girls winning comfortably 8-4. Well done to Fiona Kennedy who stepped in to play for the team at the last minute and to Sophie Dobbie who achieved Player of the Match.

Netball
On Tuesday 30th November, Doon Academy made the trip to Cumnock across the snow capped hills. Fifteen girls were there to take part in a mixed year group tournament. Five games were played with teams that were made up from 1st to 6th year. Our first year’s experienced their first netball games and all did extremely well. The first game ended in a tight 2-1 loss to Doon. The second game saw an inexperienced Doon team take on an older Cumnock team and lose 3-0. An excellent score line for our first time players. The third game allowed Doon to gain a draw and the following 2 games saw two very close score lines. Doon 1 came 2nd in the tournament with Doon 2 taking 4th place. Well done to all girls taking part in the friendly tournament, in particular Varri Murdoch and Connie Hose who received Players of the Tournament. Special mention to Savannah McMahon, Carla Strachan, Charelle Boyce, Sarah Murdoch, Nicole Millar and Robyn Mitchell who played for Doon Academy for the first time.

Netball success
S3 netball team played against Kyle Academy. Having been beaten to the cup by Kyle at the end of last season, Doon was fired up and ready to go on their rival’s arrival. The game got off to a flying start with both teams scoring quickly after the first whistle. Paige McMahon showed great skill by getting in front of her opposition and intercepting several passes. Claire Boyd also showed talent and enthusiasm by preventing several of Kyle’s attackers getting to a position to score. Sophie Dobbie and Jade Scott managed to get several more shots on target and took our team to a 5-4 win at half time. With Annabel McTaggart taking Tammy Reid’s bib and Lauren Shaw moving into Goal Keeper, the second half saw Kyle quickly draw. Varri Murdoch did a sterling job of controlling play in her centre position and managed to get the ball to our attackers allowing them to score twice. Kyle made an attempt to catch up by scoring another goal but could not get any more. Final score ended at 7-6 to Doon. Well done to all.

Netball against Cumnock
Doon kicked off their netball season with two games against Cumnock 1 and Cumnock 2. Our girls started off strong against Cumnock 1, with Sophie Dobbie scoring 2 amazing points from the circle edge. Jade Scott helped with another few points and together they had earned Doon 6 points against Cumnock 1’s 4 points. Our girls came back on to court in high spirits but unfortunately our defence system consisting of Claire Boyd, Lauren Shaw and Paige McMahon were unable to stop 8 more goals coming in from the opposition. With the help of Annabel McTaggart and Tammy Reid, our attackers, managed to score another two nets, which brought our final score to 12-8. A narrow defeat but a well played game. With only 5 minutes rest, our girls were back on court for their second game that day against Cumnock 2. The game started off in a scrappy manner, and even resulted in an injury that meant Reagan Heggie had to come on as a substitute. Fortunately our girls were in the way of the game by this time and Sophie and Jade scored several nets in quick succession, taking the score to 7-3 by the first half. By the second half, our girls were on fire, scoring goal after goal. Cumnock managed another goal but this could not hold against Doon’s 13 points. Final score ended at 13-4 to Doon. Special thanks go to Tammy Reid and Raegan Heggie for standing in at the last minute and congratulations goes to Lauren Shaw and Jade Scott for receiving Players of the Match!
